Before watching this series I had never heard of One Piece or its crew of crazy characters so I could not say how it differs from the anime.
In a way I am glad I had nothing to compare it to as I loved it. You can definitely tell from the outlandish nature of the characters, the oversized weapons and the action sequences that it was anime inspired but I feel it only added some whismy to a show that could have just been very bleak and dark in nature.
I really liked how each episode showed the backstory for each of the crew members and how they are introduced to Luffy and his quest.
Each member of the cast, Taz Skylar as Sanji, Mackenyu as Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Gibson as Usopp, and Morgan Davis as Koby, brought their characters to life in all the right ways. Each emotion heartfelt and you really care about each one of them.
But I have to say that Monkey D Luffy stole my heart. I immediately took a liking to Luffy, played by Inaki Jasso, his childlike wonder, combined with a, don't mess with my crew, attitude is contegious and I found myself cheering along side him. His crew became my crew.
I also loved the message of achieving your dream, no matter what stands in your way and I agree that we all should do what we love, however we can. A million percent yes.
Another highlight for me was the 'boss' fights. Each one brought new abilities and some amazing costumes. Though I have to say, Dracule Mihawk played by Steven John Ward, stole my heart a little bit. I'm a sucker for vampire types and a vampire pirate...Woah!
Best Episode - #8 Worst in the East - Everything combined into one episode. Great way to finish it off.
Worst Episode - #3 Tell No Tales - dragged on storyline that halted the progress of the series for me.
Honestly selecting the best and worst was hard in this case. Each episode brought in new characters and had a great storylines that merged beautifully together. I can't compare this show to the anime, but for someone new to it I truly loved it. I tried watching the anime after this and could not get into it, but as a standalone its pretty awesome.
Final Thoughts
Overall great costumes, amazing sets, so much action packed shannigans with a side of emotion that just lifted my heart. Very excited for season 2.
Score: 8.5 out of 10. Highly recommend for fans of anime or those new to it.
Always Keep Fighting.
You Are Enough.
