***
I went into reading this book with very little knowledge about it, except it was a huge hit. As Stephen King once said, “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot” And I’m a sucker for a story about dragons.
Slight heads up I rated this as R for my review simply for the action scenes towards the end, grab something to catch your tears, and the sexual content as I think most will consider this a young adult book by mistake. Unless you are comfortable with it, I would avoid giving this book to anyone under the age of 16 at the earliest.
Honestly, I was pulled into the story very quickly and wanted to root for the main character, Violet, for many reasons. I would say the biggest thing for me would be her sheer stubbornness and will that refuses to let herself fail no matter what crazy thing is thrown at her.
Plot wise the story is excellent and keeps you engaged with all the shocking twists and turns. Early on I got a massive Divergent mixed with Hunger Games, mixed with small amounts of Eragon (Dragons and special abilities) vibes but it was interesting to see this take on them.
There are different careers the young adults can go into and it is easy to see the divergent similarities there, as well as the somewhat plain main character who is really just trying to get through each day in one piece while others try to kill her. Throw in a childhood friend as well as a new face that she has mixed emotions about and you have the hunger games angle.
I was overjoyed when the dragons came into play. I will not go into too much detail to avoid spoilers but WOW. The details of flying, fighting and how each dragon species is different is just elegant. The powers are pretty awesome as well.
Only thing that I can see as a negative is that I have a feeling all her books end on a cliffhanger. Which is kinda good as you want more but having to wait is just so annoying. Hopefully they are released pretty close together.
Final Thoughts
I was hooked very quickly and was kept intrigued until the very end. Great storyline and amazing pacing. Highly recommend it if you like Divergent, Hunger Games and Eragon with a little more graphic detail.
Score: 9 out of 10. Purchased book 1 and immediately borrowed the second as I couldn’t wait.
Always Keep Fighting.
You Are Enough.
