***
I was intrigued about this new addition to the Lion King since there is very little information given about the origins of Mufasa and Scar during the original movie.
Major props to the main character voice actors, Aaron Pierre playing Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. playing Taka. Both brought deep emotion and life to their respective roles, as well as nailing the banter between the two.
Also props to Kiros played by Mads Mikkelsen, even in lion form he brings the same deep level of acting with both malice and his soft villain way of speaking. Personally, I love Mads when he plays a villain.
Songs were a little weird, but really catchy. I will never get over seeing lions singing. But I will say that baby lions are just so freaking cute no matter what they are doing.
I will say the emotional damage towards the beginning will bring back some childhood trauma. And the weird go-pro type view in the lion's faces in some scenes were not the best choice in my opinion. Just came across as strange and took me out of the moment.
On a sad note, I felt that Timon and Pumba were not needed for this story, and did not bring the funny sidekick moments to the movie in the way I think it was intended. Rafiki on the other hand was just as funny and heartwarming as the original.
Runtime was slightly long and could have been cut down with less back and forther, as well as ‘travelling’ and more action, but the action scenes provided were awesome. And by the end I was teary-eyed and cheering.
Final Thoughts
Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It held throwbacks to Simba’s life after the events of the first movie, but learning about Mufasa was everything I secretly hoped. Almost perfect.
Score: 8 out of 10. Recommend if you love the Lion King franchise.
Always Keep Fighting.
