Synopsis: After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced.

***

After the huge success of the first Moana movie I had high hopes for this one.

Right off the bat this was just as visually stunning and the water effects are just breathtaking. The biggest highlights for me were the introduction of the little sister and the same amazing dynamic between Moana and Maui, Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson. The vibe between them is just amazing to watch and each character feels genuine in their struggles.

I was slightly confused with the fact that the village is shown as still living on the same island as the last movie even though they made a big show of leaving at the end. I believed this indicated that the entire village were wayfinders but this movie seems to remove that idea and go in a new direction.

Sadly the new direction stops there as the story is very similar to the first, with the addition of the new crew members that really didn't add much to the plot. The story itself would have been good without the crew in my opinion. I feel the crew aspect would have been better in a TV series so you could have time to flesh out each character more.

It added a bunch of new characters that didn’t really do anything except 1 single thing each to point Moana  in the right direction when their time came. This could have been solved with just one or two new characters instead of the four they added.

For me the final blow for this one is that the songs are forgettable and for some reason all deeper in tone. After just coming out of the movie I can honestly not name one of them. A huge contrast to the first.

Final Thoughts

Overall I liked the movie but it definitely did not have the same impact as the first. I know Moana was older but I feel the catchy songs and amazing new characters were just not there this time around.

Score: 6.5 out of 10. Will not buy but worth watching at least once.

Always Keep Fighting.

You Are Enough.
