The Requin 2022

Genre: Horror, Thriller

Rating: R

Synopsis: A couple on a romantic getaway find themselves stranded at sea when a tropical storm sweeps away their villa. In order to survive, they are forced to fight the elements, while sharks circle below.

This R-rated shark fest is definitely more than it first appeared.

Those looking for an all-out people vs sharks show will be surprised. While there is shark action with some very scary, tension-filled moments thrown in. There are also many more honest conversations about life, heartbreak, and a couple just trying to figure things out. Seriously, they talk way more than the shark action, so just be prepared.

Speaking of the sharks and the shark action. The CGI throughout is very limited, so do not expect state-of-the-art details. Towards the end of the movie, it gets worse. And I mean bad. To where it almost takes away from the tension and the last act because of it.

Also, being a huge fan of survival video games and survival things, there were a few times I was yelling at the screen at some of their decisions. Without spoilers, I’m sure most people will think the same on a specific scene that comes to mind… I’ll just say water bottle and leave it at that.

Now let’s talk about the plot. Overall, pretty good, just horrifying. I mean, the last thing you expect when you spend out the butt for a villa on the ocean, is for a storm to just snatch the entire villa off its posts and carry you off into the ocean itself. And then not only survival, relationship situations, and damn sharks, but then you just can’t seem to catch a break. I already mentioned that I disagreed with a few of their decisions but you know without conflict it would be a pretty boring movie.

The cast did a great job with the material, but I have to give special props to Alicia Silverstone and James Tupper. James played his character perfectly and made me feel for him. The director Le-Van Kiet had amazing cinematography and was able to build up incredible tension. Unfortunately again the CGI just was not up to par.

Honestly, for me, Alicia stole the entire show. She could encompass the character so well that it was, at times, just heartbreaking to watch. She made each situation seem real, even when the CGI was unconvincing.

Final Thoughts.

Overall, it had such great potential but for me, it was only worth watching once. There was a little too much whining from Alicia's character. (I mean in a real-life situation you'd definitely want to kick her off as soon as possible.) Terrible survival advice and I'm sorry but I have to mention the awful CGI one last time. It really does get so so bad at the end.

3 out of 10. Sadly only watchable once. Do not recommend it.
