Just by the title of this movie I had a sinking feeling.
Without spoilers, it was really cool to see the origins of venom, though it was a little disappointing to hear things from outside sources who, up until this point we had not once heard of.
I could watch a million venom movies but this one felt like it wasn’t really about him or Eddie at all. They were just a means to an end so the story felt very much like someone else’s. I came to the movie to connect more to them and I had hoped it was going in a certain direction but then it went nowhere.
There is the military vs scientist trope that I both like and hate at the same time. I was glad to see in this movie that it was not completely what I expected.
Tom Hardy as both Eddie and Venom are always a pleasure to watch. I will say that Juno Temple as Dr. Teddy Paine, Clark Backo as Christmas and Chiwetel Ejiofor as General Rex Strictland, were able to keep pace with Tom and all of them delivered exactly what was expected in their respective roles.
However, I did feel that something was lacking in this addition to the franchise and I am not sure I can put a name to it, but the storyline and some writing in the middle of the movie did not help the situation. I will just say the Vegas penthouse scene and you will see what I mean. Such a WTF type moment for me and not in a good way.
Again no spoilers but I also have to add that the family served no purpose at all though I love the actors, Alanna Ubach and Rhys Ifans.
I will give the movie some credit as it did have a great battle scene, sassy as ever Venom, pretty cool looking creatures and of course, our reluctant hero Eddie. Sadly it had very little else and I did say battle scene…as in just one.
Final Thoughts
Emotional rollercoaster of a movie. I’m super sad about this one, but still worth owning as I love Venom and Tom Hardy plays him perfectly.
Score: 7 out of 10. Recommend to fans of Venom but weakest in the franchise so far.
Always Keep Fighting.
You Are Enough.
