Minions: The Rise of Gru - 2022
Genre: Family, Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy
Rating: PG 13
Synopsis: A fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them, with the backup of his followers, the Minions.
Let me be clear that I'm a huge Despicable Me fan, yet the minion movies are hit or miss for me. Considering the premise for this one I had high hopes.
The opening scene was awesome and the following credits were freaking hilarious. Little Gru is adorable and it was so nice to see Bob, Stewart, and Kevin again. The introduction of another specific minion was unnecessary and honestly in my opinion didn't help the movie.
Since most of us have seen the original movie we know some of what happens already, yet I was admittedly intrigued when I saw the trailer.
The plot was basic and even for a children's movie got a little eye-rolling towards the end. To remain spoiler free I won't say more on the end, but it really was for me a what the heck type moment.
The other downside to this movie is the minions get most of the screen time and even though it mentions the rising of Gru, I personally thought he should get more attention. While the storyline tried to focus on him they ensured the minions were still a huge part of it, even though they didn't need to be.
That being said there are moments where you can see the inspiration for Gru's future house as well as some familiar faces. As usual, the actors were incredible with their roles, and it's always nice to see Gru again. Baby Gru is just the cutest.
Final Thoughts
Honestly, though it should have been called another minion movie. In my opinion, it would have worked better that way, instead of labeling it as the rise of Gru. It was a fun ride for what it was. Don't expect massive detail of how Gru became the villain he is in the first movie. It looked to me that they are leaving the ending open as well in case they want to make more 'prequel' type movies.
6 out of 10. If you love Despicable Me and the minions then it's worth a watch. Sadly I may not buy it.
Always Keep Fighting.
You Are Enough.
